Blogolicous, part duex

As I mentioned before, I was looking at a nice blogging program to do my bloging with, without having to use the somewhat cumbersome interface Blogspot provides. Well, here’s a “test blog” which might become the real one. We’ll see how much I like it. Rest assured, no matter what my final decision is, I’ll merge the two blogs (this one and the test one) so that all my posts are readable in one place. Anyway, enough of me talking, here’s the link: http://shells.gnugeneration.com.

Blogolicous

I decided to have some with with Blosxom which is a nice bloging facility which really requires very little. (Perl and a webserver set up to run it as CGI.) I am somewhat considering moving all of my posts from Blogspot to this more-personalized setup. We’ll see.

Long awaited update

Sorry all, I kind of forgot to write something here. Most likely due to the fairly boring nature of my life at the moment.

Yesterday I went to the city (yet again!) and stopped by B&H. There after about 0.68 seconds of thinking I decided to say good bye to $350 (-$25 mail-in rebate) and get a wonderful peice of equipment made by Nikon. I’ll let you guess what it is, but to be fair, I’ll give you some clues.

  • It is kind of smallish
  • It is kind of lightish (without batteries)
  • Uses 4 AA batteries, but I can add a 5th one to make it work faster
  • It makes light

You probably now already know what it is, so I’ll show you a picture of it (I didn’t take it):

Nikon SB-800

This little puppy can make you go blind. (I am serious about this! If you get too close it will damage your eyesight.)

In other news, U.S. troops from Afghanistan invade Iraq, and the U.S. troop stationed in Iraq mistake the invasion force as Osama bin Laden’s Jihad army. News from home, a cow in Iowa gave birth to a half horse, half geese. China’s petroleum embargo of U.S. takes effect after Fidel Castro pressures Jeac Chirac, whose unexpected visit of the Kremlin stirs passionate debates in Russia’s archistic circles.

Oh, did I mention I decided to borrow all the ST:DS9 DVDs from the Levittown public library? Yeah, they have them all. Just like all the TNG DVDs, and all the TOS, and VOY DVDs. I will have a lot to watch. Yay!

NYC - the city that never sleeps

Well, I don’t know if the city never sleeps (I only visited it during the day), but I can tell you that the city is definitly not naping during daytime. Speaking of the city…I visited it on Sunday. Yes this is the third time this year. Last year I’ve been there once and that’s because I had to - paperwork :-/. This year, I am guessing I’ll visit it at least 8 times. Of course I had a camera with me, and of course I filled up my 1GB CF card. I’ll post some photos (hopefully) shortly.

As Per Your Request...

As you have requested in January, here are some more photos from my trips to NYC.

When I saw this, I was very surprised just how saturated the colors were, Graffity

This is a photo of a train..Amtrak to be exact..
Amtrak

This is what the Long Island Rail Road looks like inside. This is a car that went from Penn Station (the location in the photo) through Jamaica, to Babylon, and eventually Patchogue.

LIRR

On the way back home, I saw this outside the window…tracks on fire. (Apparently, they pour a bit of gasoline on the switches and light it on fire to prevent them from freezing.)

Tracks on Fire

All these were from the first trip to the city. Some other time (hopefully soon), I’ll go through the photos from the second trip.

Enjoy.

Torvalds Reveals Future Plans

Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, has announced what he would like to do with the Linux development in the next several decades.

In other words, we’d have an increasing level of instability with an odd release number, depending on how long-term the instability is.

- 2.6.<even>: even at all levels, aim for having had minimally intrusive patches leading up to it (timeframe: a week or two)

with the odd numbers going like:

- 2.6.<odd>: still a stable kernel, but accept bigger changes leading up to it (timeframe: a month or two).
- 2.<odd>.x: aim for big changes that may destabilize the kernel for several releases (timeframe: a year or two)
- <odd>.x.x: Linus went crazy, broke absolutely _everything_, and rewrote the kernel to be a microkernel using a special message-passing version of Visual Basic. (timeframe: "we expect that he will be released from the mental institution in a decade or two").
